Spring Break, Day 1

This year we decided to take our Spring Break and visit St. George, Utah. We had never spent any time there. We would just always drive through it and keep on truckin' to whatever destination we were headed. And we figured we just wouldn't belong there since, we weren't 75 years old, had broken a hip in the last 2 years, owned golf clubs and a huge motor home, and couldn't order off the senior citizen menu. We took and chance that somehow we would be accepted and thought this was the year to check it out. Plus, we figured St. George would be warmer than Spanish Fork. Boy were we right!
This isn't a great picture, but it shows the snow at our house the day we left to drive south. I was getting worried that maybe we wouldn't have nice weather on our vacation after all. Thank goodness the snow finally disappeared around Cedar City.
We hooked up the DVD player in the back seat for the kids. This was Jason's first real experience with it. In the past he just hasn't been interested in it. This year we gave him headphones, and this was his reaction ...
He kept the headphones on for a good half-hour, but then took them off and started eating them. I guess they were both functional and tasty. Needless to say he was banned from the headphones from then on.

We finally reached St. George after numerous stops to eat, hit the bathroom, and find a few geocaches on the way. The weather was just beautiful. We were so excited!!! After we checked into the hotel, we decided to walk around downtown St. George and enjoy the sites. Our first stop was Brigham Young's winter home.
A sister missionary took us on a tour and we learned a lot of things about Brigham Young, the history of St. George, and the people that founded the city. We also learned that Kaitlyn and Jason weren't as interested in history as Doug and I were. Kaitlyn was more interested in the ants milling about outside the house, then the historical significance of the house itself. And it was quite a workout trying to keep Jason from touching anything.
After the tour everyone was smiling again. So then we were off exploring more of St. George. We headed down towards the Tabernacle. On the way we passed some cute and eccentric shops. This picture was taken outside one of the shops.
We thought it was hilarious. It's just not something you see everyday.

Next to the Tabernacle is a beautiful city park. The landscaping was just gorgeous, and there were sculptures placed all throughout the park. These sculptures of four kids playing were Jason and Kaitlyn's favorites.
They would go up and hug and kiss the sculptures and run around them like they were real.
In the same park there was a water feature with waterfalls, streams, and fountains for the kids to play in.
We weren't prepared for the kids to play in the water, but let them in, hoping that they wouldn't get their clothes too wet. Always remember that kids + water = wet clothing. With a promise that we would come back tomorrow better prepared with swimsuits and towels, we headed back to our hotel.
As we walked back to the hotel, Doug and Kaitlyn found some geocaches and this statue along the way.
After we all got dry clothes on, we headed to dinner, then back to the hotel for swimming. Kaitlyn loved swimming, especially with her life jacket on because she said she was swimming all by herself. Jason was a little hesitant at first, but then got brave enough to jump off the edge of the pool for Doug to catch him. It was a great first day of Spring Break.
